He immortalizes the recently deceased wife of a local bootlegger named Miller, but the locals grow suspicious of the photographer's macabre demeanor and other-worldly life force. Their fears of his twisted motives are exacerbated when, hours later, Miller's daughter disappears.

Dans les bois de la Caroline du Nord, vers 1920, un voyageur mystérieux arrive dans une petite ville en vantant ses services de photographe des morts. Il immortalise la femme récemment décédée d'un trafiquant local du nom de Miller, mais les habitants commence à avoir des suspects quant au comportement macabre du photographe et de ses pouvoirs surnaturels. Leurs craintes quant à ses raisons malsaines sont exacerbées, quand, quelques heures plus tard, les filles de Miller disparaissent.

Bon è part ça, je ne sais pas vous, mais MOI, tant que y'a pas de photos du tournage, je préfère penser que rien n'est fait.
Maintes fois des rumeurs ont circulé pour découvrir qu'au bout du compte qu'il n'en était rien.
Or donc, si vous replacez cette info ailleurs, que ce soit clair que pour l'instant tout est au conditionnel...

En fait, au premier moment j'étais sûre que Miller était le nom de SON personnage, du photographe, et je m'en suis prodigieusement extasiée, pour découvrir un peu plus tard que j'avais juste fait une erreur en lisant le texte trop vite.


Quand-même, j'espère bien que ça sera vrai et que l'on aura bientôt l'occasion de voir un peu plus de M. Miller sur le grand écran.

Ca a l'air bien plus passionnant que le film avec milla ...
Bon, je suis juste déçue qu'il ne joue pas le rôle du veuf papa de 2 fillettes, là j'aurais craqué !!!
C'est très très contre nature que de le voir en méchant. C'est même pas imaginable !!!
Pour lui c'est une bonne opportunité, ça casse son image.

Mais au fait, c'est quoi ce teaser, si le film n'a pas encore été tourné ???? LOL

Je suis ENCHANTEE qu'il fasse un rôle de méchant! Je suis sure qu'il a beaucoup plus a donner dans ce genre de rôle que dans celui d'un (autre) gentil garçon.

J'imagine que certaines petites maisons de production font ce genre d'opération pour voir la réaction du public, attirer l'intérêt des foules. Si la réponse est positive ça aide surement pour avoir des financements.

De plus la maison de prod. a l'air pas mal spécialisée dans la pub, et donc je les soupçonne de savoir ce qu'ils font!

Comme nous vous l'apprenions il y a quelques temps, Wentworth Miller sera à l’affiche du nouveau film de Paul Schattel, The Mourning Portrait. Il interprétera le rôle d'un photographe dans une effrayante histoire. Nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir entrer en contact avec l’un des producteurs du film, Stephen M. Corbin, afin de lui poser quelques questions sur la réalisation, la production et bien évidement sur Wentworth Miller, afin de satisfaire la curiosité de tout les fans du Pretty.
Celui-ci nous a très gentiment répondu, bien qu’il soit pour l’instant seulement autorisé à fournir certaines informations au public et à leurs fans via Facebook, les pages d’IMDB et d’autres sites en liaison avec cette industrie. On peut donc parler d’une exclusivité pour le site Wentworth Miller The Hot Line Website :

WMTHL: Où allez-vous tourner ?
Stephen Corbin: Le film sera tourné dans un endroit situé dans la région des montagnes du nord-ouest de la Caroline. Le but maintenant est de tourner le film aussitôt que le côté pratique nous le permettra (bien qu’une date ferme n’ait pas été arrêtée au moment où nous vous écrivons). Comme vous pouvez vous en rendre compte il y a une multitude de détails minutieux et un planning à mettre en place avant de débuter le tournage principal.

WMTHL: Y a-t-il eu des recherches particulières pour les costumes d’époques. Sur quoi vous êtes vous basés ? (films, magazines, musées,...)
Stephen Corbin: C'est une pièce historique et c’est compliqué. Ca se situe aux environs de l’an 1920 en Appalachia et beaucoup de recherches ont été et sont faites pour le rendre aussi authentique que possible. Nous sommes très fiers de dire que nous avons quelques uns des meilleurs artisans et talents de l’industrie cinématographique en activité aujourd’hui, qui sont rattachés à notre film.

WMTHL: Est-ce une équipe réduite ou conséquente ?
Stephen Corbin: Ne vous y trompez pas, Wentworth Miller joue un rôle important dans notre film et en tant que tel nous sommes très heureux d’avoir quelqu’un d’aussi talentueux au sein de notre équipe de grands acteurs. Comme vous le savez nous avons aussi la grande Diane Ladd ('Chinatown', 'Wild At Heart') et Melissa Leo ('Frozen River', 'Everybody's Fine') et Garret Dillahunt ('No Country For Old Men', 'The Assassination Of Jesse James By the coward Robert Ford') qui jouent les rôles principaux, avec d’autres qui doivent encore être annoncés. Pour l’instant nous avons une distribution stupéfiante.

WMTHL: Allez-vous tourner en 35 mm scope Panavision ou allez-vous utiliser des caméras HD type Red-One ou Genesis ?
Stephen Corbin: Le film sera tourné en 35mm Panavision ou un équivalent, en utilisant plusieurs cameras.

WMTHL: Y aura-t-il des cascades nécessitant une doublure ou un cascadeur pour remplacer Wentworth ?
Stephen Corbin: Des cascadeurs seront nécessaires pour doubler M. Miller et les autres.

WMTHL: Combien de jours de tournage sont prévus ?
Stephen Corbin: Le tournage durera approximativement 30 jours sur place et le temps nécessaire en studio.

WMTHL: Y a-t-il des effets spéciaux type numérique ou par maquillage ?
Stephen Corbin: Il y aura quelques effets spéciaux par maquillage, bien que je ne puisse pas entrer dans les détails sur le type exact.

WMTHL: Le film sera destiné au cinéma ou la TV ? Une sortie est-elle prévue dans d’autres pays que les Etats-Unis ?
Stephen Corbin: C’est un long-métrage indépendant, pas un film pour la télévision. Le film sera disponible ici aux Etats-Unis et aussi dans plusieurs pays étrangers, espérons moins d’une année après son achèvement.

Nous espérons que ces quelques questions vous auront éclaircis sur la participation de Wentworth dans ce film qui s’avére incroyable par la qualité du script ainsi que celle du casting.

We had a chance to talk to the director of The Mourning Portrait, Paul Schattel, and learn more about the movie, and what it’s like to make an independent horror film.

KDK12: First of all, thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Can you give us horror fans a sense of what inspired Mourning Portrait?

PS: The Mourning Portrait is a project originated by myself and co-writer Patrick Greene. At the time he and I both lived in Appalachia (I still do) and are/were surrounded by the somewhat gloomy, death-and-religion-obsessed world of early 20th Century mountain culture. It’s still here — just go ten minutes outside of Asheville and you’ll find a great deal of that world still around. I’m a huge fan of that culture and that music — think Ralph Stanley’s ‘O Death’ or the various murder ballads out there.

The movie itself is based around those wonderfully morbid post-mortem photos so prominent in early Appalachian culture. Patrick and I fashioned a story around that practice, with a few Southern Gothicisms tossed in for good measure — Pentacostal snake-handling, moonshining and so on. It’s not a ghost story — it’s not one of those supernatural thrillers where you don’t know if the lead character is haunted or insane (The Shining, The Haunting of Hill House, The Others, etc.) Instead, we created a dark story that is somewhat thriller-oriented — one about a mysterious and very bad man in a small, impoverished and isolated community — but much more phantasmagoric in execution. And the trappings of early Appalachia give it quite a bit of natural mood and morbidity that really serves the story.

KDK12: Sounds interesting and quite a bit different than what’s out there now. And you’ve got a star cast lined up, I’ve noticed. Can you tell us a little about them, and the roles they’ll be playing in the movie?

PS: Currently, we’re lucky enough to have the amazing Dermot Mulroney attached as our lead, Miller. The legendary Diane Ladd will play a character known as Aunt Ilya, a sort of grandmother figure to Miller’s two daughters. The great Melissa Leo is ostensibly our female lead, a bad-ass mountain chick called Hannah, and the insanely cool actor/writer Wentworth Miller is our heavy, The Photographer. We’re chasing some other cool names as we speak, but nothing definite just yet. All of these actors seemed to respond mainly to the material and the intelligence with which it’s handled. It’s a good story.

KDK12: How far are you in production of Mourning Portrait?

PS: We’re firmly in the funding phase. We started our marketing presence early, of course, to get word out and also to help us reach a critical mass. That’s helped a great deal, but it’s undeniably a tough time to be making indie movies of a certain budget right now. With the film industry undergoing the same seismic shifting the music industry went through a few years ago, finding significant funds for a thinking man’s indie horror film have become more challenging, even with ‘names’ attached. Luckily we have Belladonna Productions on our side, so that’s made things a lot easier. But these things take time.

KDK12: You do have big budget needs, at least from an indie perspective, 1.4 million, I believe. We noticed that you’re using crowdrazor as a way of raising funds. Is this an approach you would recommend to other indie filmmakers? How has your experience been with crowd funding?

PS: Crowdrazor is great and very innovative, I think it’s terrific, as are IndieGogo, Kickstarter and the others. For smaller-budgeted movies (micro- or low-budget) they’re terrific, they can really save the day. We’re in a slightly different category, however — with Melissa and Wentworth and Dermot and so on, we seem to be in a higher tax bracket, as it were, and in that context those types of fundraising vehicles become more about gaining a good-vibes groundswell and less about finding the actual financing. It’s a way to show investors and others that people are enthusiastic about this project and want to see it.

KDK12: So, every dollar we fans put up is a sign that there’s an audience out there, and that attracts the big investors. That’s a really interesting way to do it. Do you find that the horror community is supportive of indie filmmakers? Is there more we could be doing to support you and other filmmakers?

PS: The horror community is probably the most supportive of all. Think of all the great filmmakers who’ve gotten started in horror — Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg … Oliver Stone and Brian DePalma, even. It’s an incredibly nurturing and fun place to be, because we’re all here for the love of the game. We love this genre and are proud of it. Horror fans watch and re-watch those films religiously. This last Halloween I introduced my little boy and his friends to The Evil Dead 2 and though they found it a bit goofy, I have a feeling they’ll be watching that film for years to come.

KDK12: Evil Dead is a great movie! And a good one for introducing the new generation to horror movies. I’ll have to remember that one for my nieces and nephews. As I’m sure you know, horror is often dismissed by mainstream viewers and filmmakers. Why do you think that is?

PS: Horror is often dismissed by critics, as are other ‘genre’ types of filmmaking (and literature, too) — but often with good measure. Most of those films are trash. The science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon once claimed ‘90 percent of everything is crap,’ and that applies to horror movies, too. If you look at the ones that last, however — The Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead, Repulsion, Don’t Look Now — they speak to something more than just jumps, more than just BOO! Just BOO! is easy, and lame. There’s a rare depth in so-called serious films like Apocalypse Now or Platoon or Full Metal Jacket or The Deerhunter, to name several acclaimed Viet Nam movies. Those films get under your skin in a way that leaves you transformed; they teach us about ourselves. And the same is true with good horror — Jaws, The Ring, Night of the Hunter, An American Werewolf in London, Suspiria, Carrie, Audition. These films are ‘art’ because they take on ideas and deal with themes that resonate, they’re not just trying to scare you. Sometimes their scares are the least of what makes them interesting.

In my opinion, anytime you have an agenda to do just one thing — whether that is to merely frighten (horror), titillate (as seen in porn movies) or vicariously thrill (ie — two-dimensional superhero
films), then we’re left wanting more. A good horror film supplies more.

KDK12: Do you think there is something we can do to change the perception of the horror film, to give it greater legitimacy?

PS: Something we could do to change the way horror is perceived is to make better horror movies. Go deeper into character, into story and theme, not just gore or thrills.

To have resonance, an engaging story is usually about people. Stephen King once said that he spends the first 100 pages of his books getting us to care about his characters, and the last 300 pages putting them through hell. That’s not a bad way to look at it. Whether you’re reading Joyce Carol Oates, Flannery O’Connor or Raymond Carver, the reason we like them and remember them is that they got beneath our surface, they wormed their way into our psyches and wouldn’t let go. Usually that’s through a character or situation we care about. If you’re a master magician like Stanley Kubrick, you can get away with having protagonists you don’t really like (think Joker in Full Metal Jacket). But for most of us mere mortals we start by creating a sympathetic protagonist and then send them through hell. If you can toss in a few good ideas and compelling themes and a great presentation on top of that, you’re golden.

KDK12: Definitely. In fact, we just printed open letters to filmmakers and viewers, and what we said there really resonates with what you’re saying. We need to speak with our dollars and our voices to demand more than just another sequel or remake. But, back to The Mourning Portrait–What do you need most of all from the horror community to make Mourning Portrait a success?

PS: Mainly their interest. Storytellers need an audience who give a shit. There are so many competing forms of media these days that its easy to get lost in the shuffle — the Internet, video games, viral videos and so on. But we all love stories, and frankly, we need them. Everyone (including myself) is always on the lookout for the next good story. The Mourning Portrait team think we’ve got a good story, one that will last. But that’s only one side of the conversation — we need people to step up and be enthusiastic about it, too. So far we’ve been pleasantly surprised and very grateful to those who’ve engaged with us. The enthusiasm factor is like nothing I’ve ever seen. So we feel blessed. We appreciate our audiences’ interest and certainly don’t take it for granted. And we will deliver — trust me, this movie is one for the ages. We’re swinging for the fences here — we’re hoping not to just frighten a few folks, but to make true art, something that will stand the test of time. And if we scare the shit out of them, too, then that’s even better.
